GATLAW : Nature is Nonbinary
Nature is Nonbinary: Sex and Gender in the Animal Kingdom . Nat Smith, LVT, CWR (they/them) is the founder and coordinator of the Mutual Aid Wildlife Rehabilitation Project (MAWR) , an intersectional project that champions the decolonization of conservation, reciprocity, and solidarity within ecosystems. Nat has worn various hats over the years, mostly focused on transliberation and prison industrial complex abolition and bridges those movements with a queer ecology conservation framework within the field of wildlife rehabilitation. Nat is co-editor of Captive Genders: Transembodiment and the Prison Industrial Complex , AK Press, 2012, now in its second edition. MAWR believes that the fates of humans and wildlife are intertwined due to facing the shared harms inherent within capitalism. The forces behind racism, ableism, sexism, and other forms of oppression are responsible for environmental degradation. The path forward requires recognition that the systemic ecological harms faced by wildlife are also faced by humans, particularly those on the margins and the movement(s) for justice must be led by those humans who are most impacted. Gay at the Library After Work (GATLAW) provides a unique opportunity to learn about cool topics from amazing queer experts. We’re delighted for this chance to work with SoFLX Pride in the community throughout this year and can’t wait for you to join us.
